What is Hydroxocobalamin (vitamin B12)?

Hydroxocobalamin is the injectable form of vitamin B12 used in the UK, replacing the vitamin directly into muscle and bypassing the gut absorption problems that cause most deficiency.

The condition it treats

B12 deficiency causes fatigue, pins and needles, low mood and, untreated, irreversible nerve damage. Because its causes range from diet to pernicious anaemia (which needs lifelong treatment and GP-led investigation), the pathway is deliberate about who is treated privately and who is referred.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the vitamin B12 deficiency consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Practitioner training
✓Registered healthcare professional from a profession authorised to supply under PGDs (Schedule 16, Part 4 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012), such as a pharmacist, nurse, paramedic or physiotherapist, with current registration with their professional regulator
✓Practising from premises suitable for the service, such as registered pharmacy premises or a registered clinic
✓Assessed clinical competency for this service, declared and reviewed as part of PGD authorisation
✓Sign-off against the current version of this PGD in Scripter before first supply; sign-offs expire automatically when the protocol is updated, and the platform notifies everyone affected
✓In-date basic life support and safeguarding training
✓Indemnity arrangements covering the service
✓Face-to-face injection technique training for the relevant route
✓In-date anaphylaxis recognition and management training, with adrenaline available on site
✓Vaccine storage and cold-chain procedures in place where the service supplies vaccines
Patient eligibility
✓Adults meeting the governing PGD's criteria, typically with documented low B12 or an assessed dietary cause
✓Neurological symptoms or suspected pernicious anaemia referred for GP-led investigation, not just injected
✓Frequency of maintenance dosing per the governing PGD, recorded against the patient record
✓GP notification completed so primary-care records stay whole

Hydroxocobalamin (vitamin B12) PGD questions

Why will the practitioner not simply inject anyone who feels tired?+

Because deficiency has causes that need investigation, and neurological symptoms need urgent GP care; the screening step separates wellness requests from clinical deficiency, and documents which this is.

How often are maintenance injections given?+

At the interval the governing PGD sets for the assessed cause; the record tracks each dose so the schedule is enforced by the system, not memory.

Is the GP informed?+

Yes, automatically; B12 status matters to future blood tests and diagnoses, so the notification step is not optional.
