What is Esomeprazole?

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that switches off acid production in the stomach lining. A short course settles the heartburn and regurgitation of reflux disease, with the consultation screening for the alarm symptoms that need investigation rather than treatment.

The condition it treats

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is acid from the stomach washing back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn, an acid taste and sometimes cough or hoarseness. It is common and usually benign, but persistent or alarm symptoms need proper assessment.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the gastro-oesophageal reflux disease consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Esomeprazole PGD questions

Omeprazole or esomeprazole?+

They are closely related; esomeprazole is the single-isomer form and some patients respond better to one than the other. The pathway supplies either within its limits.

How long should I take it?+

A short course of a few weeks, with review if symptoms return; long-term use should be reviewed by a prescriber.

When should I see a doctor instead?+

Difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools, or symptoms that persist despite treatment.
