What is Meningococcal B vaccine?

The MenB vaccine is a non-live vaccine offered privately to children who missed the infant programme and to adolescents and young adults heading to university, where group B disease clusters. The number of doses depends on age at the first dose.

The condition it treats

Meningococcal group B bacteria cause meningitis and septicaemia that can kill within hours or leave lasting disability. Teenagers and young adults carry the bacteria at the highest rates, which is why vaccination before university is common.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the meningococcal b protection consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Meningococcal B vaccine PGD questions

My child had MenB as a baby. Do they need it again?+

Usually not; this service is for people who missed the infant course or were born before it was introduced.

Is this the same as the MenACWY jab?+

No. MenACWY covers four other groups and is on the teenage schedule; MenB is a separate vaccine and is not routinely offered to teenagers.

How many doses?+

Two doses for older children and adults, with the interval set by the governing PGD.
