What is Dengue (Qdenga)?

Qdenga is a live attenuated two-dose dengue vaccine, given three months apart. Guidance on who benefits is nuanced, particularly around prior dengue infection, which is precisely why supply sits inside a structured consultation.

The condition it treats

Dengue is the fastest-growing mosquito-borne disease, causing high fever, severe aches and, in second infections especially, a risk of severe disease. Urban tropical travel is enough for exposure; no specific antiviral treatment exists.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the dengue protection consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Practitioner training
✓Registered healthcare professional from a profession authorised to supply under PGDs (Schedule 16, Part 4 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012), such as a pharmacist, nurse, paramedic or physiotherapist, with current registration with their professional regulator
✓Practising from premises suitable for the service, such as registered pharmacy premises or a registered clinic
✓Assessed clinical competency for this service, declared and reviewed as part of PGD authorisation
✓Sign-off against the current version of this PGD in Scripter before first supply; sign-offs expire automatically when the protocol is updated, and the platform notifies everyone affected
✓In-date basic life support and safeguarding training
✓Indemnity arrangements covering the service
✓Face-to-face injection technique training for the relevant route
✓In-date anaphylaxis recognition and management training, with adrenaline available on site
✓Vaccine storage and cold-chain procedures in place where the service supplies vaccines
Patient eligibility
✓Travellers meeting the governing PGD's criteria, with prior dengue history explored in the consultation
✓Live-vaccine screening completed: immunosuppression and pregnancy excluded
✓Two-dose schedule (0 and 3 months) planned against travel dates
✓Daytime bite precautions counselled regardless of vaccination

Dengue (Qdenga) PGD questions

Why does previous dengue infection matter so much?+

Dengue's severe form is linked to second infections, and vaccine guidance differs by prior-infection status; the consultation takes that history seriously rather than treating the vaccine as routine.

Can the two doses straddle the trip?+

Sometimes the first dose plus precautions is the realistic plan, with dose two on return; the pathway documents the partial-protection position honestly.

Is the traveller covered against Zika too?+

No; different virus, same mosquito. Bite precautions cover the family of risks that no single vaccine does.
