What is Shingles vaccine?

The recombinant shingles vaccine is a non-live vaccine given as two doses two to six months apart. It is highly effective at preventing shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia in adults from 50, and the private service covers people not yet eligible under the NHS programme.

The condition it treats

Shingles is the reactivation of the chickenpox virus in later life, causing a painful blistering rash that can leave months of nerve pain. Risk rises with age and with a weakened immune system.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the shingles prevention consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Shingles vaccine PGD questions

Who qualifies for the private service?+

Most often people from 50 who fall outside the NHS age bands, and anyone wanting protection sooner than the programme reaches them.

Can I have it if I have already had shingles?+

Yes, once the acute episode has settled; a previous episode does not protect against another.

Is it a live vaccine?+

No. The recombinant vaccine is non-live, which is why it can be given to people with weakened immune systems.
