What is Azelastine nasal spray?

Azelastine is a fast-acting topical antihistamine nasal spray, relieving sneezing, itching and runny nose within minutes of a dose. Delivered where the allergy happens, it avoids the drowsiness of older oral antihistamines.

The condition it treats

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal lining triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites or animal dander. Beyond the streaming nose it disturbs sleep, concentration and exam performance, and poorly controlled rhinitis worsens asthma.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the allergic rhinitis consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Azelastine nasal spray PGD questions

How quickly does azelastine work?+

Within about 15 minutes, which makes it useful for unpredictable exposure like visiting a house with a cat, as well as regular use through a season.

Why a nasal antihistamine rather than tablets?+

Topical delivery puts the antihistamine on the affected tissue at higher concentration with minimal drowsiness; for nose-dominant symptoms it often beats tablets.

Bitter taste after spraying: is that normal?+

Yes, if the head is tipped back and the spray runs down the throat. Technique counselling in the pathway (head forward, aim away from the septum) largely prevents it.
