What is Japanese encephalitis?

Ixiaro is an inactivated two-dose vaccine against Japanese encephalitis, with the course ideally completed at least a week before travel and an accelerated schedule available for adults.

The condition it treats

Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito-borne viral brain infection of rural Asia, rare in travellers but devastating when it strikes: a third of symptomatic cases die and half of survivors carry neurological damage. Rural, rice-field and long-stay itineraries drive the risk.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the japanese encephalitis protection consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Japanese encephalitis PGD questions

Is this vaccine necessary for a city break in Asia?+

Usually not; risk concentrates in rural, agricultural areas during transmission seasons. The risk assessment matches the itinerary against current guidance rather than selling by geography.

How long does the course take?+

Two doses 28 days apart conventionally, or an accelerated 7-day schedule for adults; the booking flow works backwards from the flight.

Bite avoidance still matters?+

Always; the same mosquitoes carry dengue and more, so repellent, sleeves and nets remain the first line, vaccinated or not.
