What is Chickenpox vaccine?

The varicella vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine given as two doses four to eight weeks apart. It is offered privately to children and adults who have not had chickenpox, and to household contacts of people who are immunosuppressed.

The condition it treats

Chickenpox is usually mild in young children but can be severe in adolescents, adults and pregnant women, with complications including pneumonia and bacterial skin infection. Vaccination prevents the illness and the later risk of shingles from the wild virus.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the chickenpox prevention consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Chickenpox vaccine PGD questions

Why is chickenpox vaccine not routine on the NHS?+

It is being introduced to the routine childhood schedule; until it reaches every age group, private vaccination fills the gap for older children and adults.

Can adults have it?+

Yes. Adults who have never had chickenpox are at higher risk of complications and are a common reason for the service.

Is it safe in pregnancy?+

No, as a live vaccine it is deferred until after pregnancy, and conception should be avoided for a period after each dose.
