What is Finasteride 1 mg?

Finasteride 1 mg blocks 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that miniaturises genetically susceptible hair follicles. Taken daily, it slows or stops further loss in most men and partially regrows hair in many.

The condition it treats

Androgenetic alopecia is progressive, patterned hair loss at the temples and crown, driven by DHT acting on genetically sensitive follicles. It affects around half of men by fifty; treatment works best when started early, because it preserves follicles rather than resurrecting them.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Practitioner training
✓Registered healthcare professional from a profession authorised to supply under PGDs (Schedule 16, Part 4 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012), such as a pharmacist, nurse, paramedic or physiotherapist, with current registration with their professional regulator
✓Practising from premises suitable for the service, such as registered pharmacy premises or a registered clinic
✓Assessed clinical competency for this service, declared and reviewed as part of PGD authorisation
✓Sign-off against the current version of this PGD in Scripter before first supply; sign-offs expire automatically when the protocol is updated, and the platform notifies everyone affected

✓Indemnity arrangements covering the service
Patient eligibility
✓Adult men with male pattern hair loss within the governing PGD's criteria
✓Not supplied to women or children; handling precautions for pregnant partners counselled

✓Patients with prostate investigations underway flagged: finasteride lowers PSA readings

Finasteride 1 mg PGD questions

How long until finasteride shows results?+

Shedding slows over three to six months, with regrowth judged at twelve; the pathway books reviews on that timescale so nobody quits at the trough.

What about the side effects people read about?+

A small minority experience reduced libido or erectile difficulty; the consultation covers the evidence honestly before supply and the record makes review straightforward. Any mood change is a stop-and-refer.

Does it affect prostate cancer screening?+

Finasteride roughly halves PSA levels; the record notes the supply so any future PSA result can be interpreted correctly, and patients are told to mention it to their GP.
