What is Chikungunya?

Two recent vaccines protect against chikungunya: Ixchiq, a single-dose live attenuated vaccine, and Vimkunya, a recombinant virus-like-particle vaccine. Availability of both lets the consultation fit the vaccine to the traveller's age and immune status.

The condition it treats

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus of the tropics whose signature is severe joint pain that can persist for months. Outbreak-prone regions across Africa, Asia and the Americas drive travel risk, and until recently avoidance was the only tool.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the chikungunya protection consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Practitioner training
✓Registered healthcare professional from a profession authorised to supply under PGDs (Schedule 16, Part 4 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012), such as a pharmacist, nurse, paramedic or physiotherapist, with current registration with their professional regulator
✓Practising from premises suitable for the service, such as registered pharmacy premises or a registered clinic
✓Assessed clinical competency for this service, declared and reviewed as part of PGD authorisation
✓Sign-off against the current version of this PGD in Scripter before first supply; sign-offs expire automatically when the protocol is updated, and the platform notifies everyone affected
✓In-date basic life support and safeguarding training
✓Indemnity arrangements covering the service
✓Face-to-face injection technique training for the relevant route
✓In-date anaphylaxis recognition and management training, with adrenaline available on site
✓Vaccine storage and cold-chain procedures in place where the service supplies vaccines
Patient eligibility
✓Travellers to outbreak or endemic areas meeting the governing PGD's risk criteria
✓Vaccine choice per the governing PGD: live-vaccine screening applies to Ixchiq, with age-group guidance observed for both
✓Immunosuppression and pregnancy screened; unsuitable travellers counselled on avoidance instead
✓Daytime mosquito bite precautions counselled; the vector bites by day

Chikungunya PGD questions

Why are there two different chikungunya vaccines?+

One is live attenuated and single-dose, the other recombinant; immune status and age guidance decide which is appropriate, which is exactly the choice the consultation is structured to make.

What does chikungunya actually do?+

Fever and intense joint pain, with the joint symptoms sometimes lasting months; that persistence is what makes prevention worth a needle for at-risk itineraries.

Do bite precautions still matter after vaccination?+

Yes; the same daytime-biting mosquitoes spread dengue and Zika, so repellent and cover remain non-negotiable travel advice.
