What is Hepatitis B vaccine?

The hepatitis B vaccine is a recombinant vaccine given as a course of three doses over six months, or on an accelerated schedule when travel is imminent. It is recommended for longer stays, work or study abroad, and any trip where medical or dental treatment, tattoos or new sexual contact are plausible.

The condition it treats

Hepatitis B is a blood-borne and sexually transmitted virus that can cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prevalence is high across much of Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, and an accident abroad can mean treatment in a setting where it circulates freely.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the hepatitis b protection for travel consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Hepatitis B vaccine PGD questions

How many doses are needed?+

Three on the standard course, or three doses in three weeks plus a booster at a year on the accelerated course for last-minute travel.

Should I have the combined hepatitis A and B vaccine instead?+

If both are indicated, the combined vaccine saves injections; the consultation recommends whichever fits the itinerary and timescale.

How long does protection last?+

A completed course gives long-term protection; most people do not need a routine booster.
