What is Typhoid?

Typhoid vaccination comes as a single Vi polysaccharide injection (Typhim Vi) or a live oral capsule course (Vivotif). Both protect against Salmonella Typhi; the consultation matches the format to the traveller.

The condition it treats

Typhoid fever is a systemic bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water, common where sanitation is poor, notably South Asia. Protection matters most for travellers visiting friends and relatives, who eat furthest from tourist kitchens.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the typhoid fever protection for travel consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Practitioner training
✓Registered healthcare professional from a profession authorised to supply under PGDs (Schedule 16, Part 4 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012), such as a pharmacist, nurse, paramedic or physiotherapist, with current registration with their professional regulator
✓Practising from premises suitable for the service, such as registered pharmacy premises or a registered clinic
✓Assessed clinical competency for this service, declared and reviewed as part of PGD authorisation
✓Sign-off against the current version of this PGD in Scripter before first supply; sign-offs expire automatically when the protocol is updated, and the platform notifies everyone affected
✓In-date basic life support and safeguarding training
✓Indemnity arrangements covering the service
✓Face-to-face injection technique training for the relevant route
✓In-date anaphylaxis recognition and management training, with adrenaline available on site
✓Vaccine storage and cold-chain procedures in place where the service supplies vaccines
Patient eligibility
✓Travellers to risk destinations identified in the risk assessment, ideally two weeks before departure
✓Format chosen per the governing PGD: injectable for most, oral course where suitable and preferred
✓Live oral vaccine screened for immunosuppression, pregnancy and antibiotic timing
✓Food and water precautions counselled; no typhoid vaccine is complete protection

Typhoid PGD questions

Injection or capsules: which is better?+

Protection is broadly comparable; the injection is one visit, the capsules are three doses at home with storage and timing rules. The consultation picks with the traveller, not for them.

How long does protection last?+

Around three years for the injectable and about the same for the completed oral course; the record dates it so the next trip's consultation knows instantly.

Why do the capsules have so many rules?+

Vivotif is a live vaccine taken on an empty stomach, kept refrigerated, spaced across days and separated from antibiotics; the counselling step turns that into a simple calendar.
