What is Nystatin oral suspension?

Nystatin is an antifungal suspension held in the mouth after food four times a day to clear oral candidiasis. It is not absorbed, so it is safe across ages, including infants, and the consultation looks for the causes behind recurrent thrush such as inhaled steroids, dentures or antibiotics.

The condition it treats

Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth causing white patches, soreness and altered taste. It is common in babies, denture wearers, inhaler users and after antibiotics, and recurrent episodes can point to an underlying cause worth checking.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the oral thrush consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Nystatin oral suspension PGD questions

How do I use the suspension?+

Hold each dose in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing, four times a day after food, for the course length in the governing PGD.

Why does my inhaler cause thrush?+

Steroid inhalers deposit medicine in the mouth; a spacer and rinsing after each use largely prevent it, and the consultation covers technique.

Can babies have it?+

Yes, within the age limits of the governing PGD; nystatin is not absorbed and is the standard treatment for infant thrush.
