What is Rabies (pre-exposure)?

Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is a short course (typically three doses over three to four weeks, with accelerated options) that primes immunity so that a bite abroad needs only simple, accessible boosters instead of immunoglobulin that many countries cannot supply.

The condition it treats

Rabies is transmitted by mammal bites and scratches, and once symptoms begin it is almost universally fatal. Risk concentrates where dog rabies circulates and medical care is remote; pre-exposure vaccination buys time and removes the immunoglobulin scramble.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the rabies pre-exposure protection consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Practitioner training
✓Registered healthcare professional from a profession authorised to supply under PGDs (Schedule 16, Part 4 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012), such as a pharmacist, nurse, paramedic or physiotherapist, with current registration with their professional regulator
✓Practising from premises suitable for the service, such as registered pharmacy premises or a registered clinic
✓Assessed clinical competency for this service, declared and reviewed as part of PGD authorisation
✓Sign-off against the current version of this PGD in Scripter before first supply; sign-offs expire automatically when the protocol is updated, and the platform notifies everyone affected
✓In-date basic life support and safeguarding training
✓Indemnity arrangements covering the service
✓Face-to-face injection technique training for the relevant route
✓In-date anaphylaxis recognition and management training, with adrenaline available on site
✓Vaccine storage and cold-chain procedures in place where the service supplies vaccines
Patient eligibility
✓Travellers whose destination, duration, activities or remoteness meet the governing PGD's risk criteria
✓Course scheduling checked against departure date, including accelerated schedules where permitted
✓Standard vaccine screening completed
✓Post-bite plan counselled: wash, seek boosters urgently, vaccination is not a licence to handle animals

Rabies (pre-exposure) PGD questions

If bitten after the course, is the traveller safe?+

Safer, not finished: they still need prompt post-exposure boosters, but no immunoglobulin and less urgency; that difference is the entire point of pre-exposure vaccination.

Who really needs this vaccine?+

Long stays, rural or remote itineraries, cycling and running, work with animals, and children (who get bitten more and report it less); the risk assessment weighs each.

How close to departure can the course start?+

Accelerated schedules exist for tight timelines; the consultation lays the doses against the departure date and documents what protection level travel begins with.
