What is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a progestogen that holds off a period for events such as holidays, exams or weddings. Taken three times a day from three days before the expected period, it delays bleeding for up to a set number of days, with a period following a few days after stopping.

The condition it treats

Menstrual timing can clash with travel, sport, examinations or religious observance. Short-term period delay is a well-established use of norethisterone for people not using hormonal contraception, with a screen for the clotting and liver risks that rule some patients out.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the period delay consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Norethisterone PGD questions

When do I start taking it?+

Three days before the period is due, then three times a day until the day you want the period to return.

Is it a contraceptive?+

No. Norethisterone at this dose does not prevent pregnancy, and the consultation confirms pregnancy is not a possibility before supply.

Why can I not have it if I take the pill?+

Combined pill users can delay a period by running packs together, which the consultation explains instead.

Run a period delay service without the paperwork.
