What is Mometasone nasal spray?

Mometasone is a potent intranasal corticosteroid with minimal systemic absorption. In prolonged sinusitis it shrinks the swollen lining of the nose and sinus openings, letting the sinuses drain and clear without antibiotics.

The condition it treats

Sinusitis lasting beyond ten days or so reflects lingering inflammation of the sinus lining after an infection, and most cases still resolve without antibiotics. NICE recommends a high-dose intranasal steroid for prolonged symptoms, which is exactly the slot this PGD fills.

How the service runs on Scripter

Patients book online, complete the pre-consultation questionnaire, and the guided pathway walks the practitioner through the prolonged sinusitis consultation with the screening and counselling steps built in. The supply decision, the record and any GP notification are produced in the same flow, documented against the exact protocol version in force.

Training and eligibility requirements.

Who can deliver this service, and who it can be delivered to. The governing PGD document defines the definitive inclusion, exclusion and supply criteria; the Scripter consultation pathway enforces them, and every consultation is documented against the protocol version it ran under.

Mometasone nasal spray PGD questions

Why a steroid spray instead of antibiotics?+

Most prolonged sinusitis is inflammatory rather than bacterial; national guidance recommends intranasal steroids first, reserving antibiotics for the presentations that meet bacterial criteria.

How is this different from the antibiotic sinusitis PGDs?+

The consultation pathway applies the same national criteria a GP would: steroid spray for prolonged inflammatory symptoms, antibiotics only when the bacterial picture (or deterioration) justifies them.

When should a sinusitis patient skip the pharmacy entirely?+

Swelling around the eye, severe one-sided pain, neurological symptoms or a very unwell patient are emergency referrals; the pathway screens these before anything else.
